“Freedom” can be defined as “the power to determine action without restraint” (dictionary.com). We often use this meaning as we make decisions every day — some of us may even choose to live with this as a type of “motto”. While this definition is certainly appropriate, the type of freedom that Jesus provides is something much more purposeful.
In the Bible the apostle Paul declares, “It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.” (Galatians 5:1) As we, the church, gather to celebrate the work of Jesus on the cross and His victory over the grave, we want to emphasize a specific aspect of the freedom Christ gives. Paul writes, “For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.” (Gal 5:13) The freedom that we have in Christ is not meant to be used as an invitation to do whatever we want. Instead, Paul exhorts us to see it as a door of opportunity to freely live a life of service and love for others.
As we celebrate the power of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, please join us for the following events that will help us understand and experience this “Freedom to Live”.
