“The person who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the person who sows generously will also reap generously. Each person should do as he has decided in his heart–not reluctantly or our of compulsion, since God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make every grace overflow to you, so that in every way, always having everything you need, you may excel in every good work.” 2 Corinthians 9:6-8
According to Scripture, heart-directed giving that pleases God follows four basic and timeless principles:
- Give Generously (v.6) – We are to give generously. As we sow, we will reap, if we give generously, we will reap generously. We can never outgive God.
- Give Intentionally (v.7) – We are to give intentionally, not impulsively. Each Christian is to determine for themselves what and how God is leading them to give and then intentionally set aside that amount to give to the work of God’s kingdom.
- Give Cheerfully (v.7) – We are to give with a cheerful heart, not reluctantly. Giving should never be done under compulsion or pressure. Giving should always be done freely, as an expression of our thankfulness, trust, and worship of God.
- Give in Faith (v.8) – We are to give as an expression of our faith in God. We can trust that if we give generously, intentionally, and cheerfully, God will honor our giving and provide for our needs. He will give us everything we need to excel in every good work!
