Calling to Ministry | Casey B. Young

As I have grown and discovered my spiritual giftings from God, I have found that I am passionate in teaching and preaching the Bible to all who are in need of the life-changing message. I have always loved learning the Scriptures and mining the truths within it. Much of my own testimony in the faith has been rooted in learning and understanding the Bible and the theology around it. God has blessed me with the opportunity and fervor to learn His word and to present it to others. As my pastor puts it, I really enjoy teaching and preaching and have found the most fulfillment and joy in doing so. During my time in college, God gave me a passion to be with His people and to minister and shepherd people to understanding the grace of God and to worship our Savior Jesus. The more that I explored the will of God in my life and his calling, I found that ministry was where He was guiding me towards. As I have journeyed down this path with the Spirit’s guidance, I have found that God has affirmed this calling over and over. Though I see that God calls us in many ways, his ultimate call to us is to make disciples and to be His ambassador to all who are around us.

I see this as my first and primary vocational objective, to teach and preach the word to where God has placed me and will lead me to. The population that God has equipped me to reach and to grow a love for is the Asian American community in the Los Angeles area. I am personally an Asian American that grew up in the context of an immigrant church and have been amidst the American culture. My passion is to reach the second generation of the Chinese churches and to impact the Asian American culture that is so prominent in the Los Angeles area. With my time at Talbot, I hope to be equipped in understanding the Bible and to effectively teach and preach it in the contemporary culture. I hope to not merely make the Word of God relevant to the culture, but to bring the culture to the understanding of the Bible and what the message it teaches. I strongly believe that the preaching of God’s word is the primary and only way that God saves sinners unto himself through the work of Jesus Christ. I also hope that my time at Talbot will help me to find and define my “voice” and how I can effectively communicate the word of God.

The second part of my vocational objective is to counsel and care for broken people in finding their wholeness that is in Jesus, and to be redeemed and restored as a child of God. In our modern culture of social media and fast-paced advancements in technology, I find that more than ever, people are lost and broken. Our culture, promotes a lifestyle that creates broken relationships and interaction between people are shallow and meaningless. Beyond that, the temptations of media and society has been stronger than ever. But, the simple solution to it all is the saving grace that is found in Jesus Christ. In a culture of brokenness and relationships that are left shattered in families and  friendships, it is only by the work of the Holy Spirit and the reconciliation that is found in Christ that can heal and restore. The ministry of Christ was always about find restoration and redemption with God and the gospel message is central to these truths. As Christians, we are called to bring the reconciliation that is found in Christ to the people and world around us. In such a culture and society as ours, it is only by biblical counseling that is rooted in Christ can we begin to mend the brokenness in relationships and to restore a correct view of life and relationship with God. I hope that in my time at Talbot, God will continue to work in my heart to have the ears to listen to people and to have the means and courage to speak the message of hope into lives around me.

My vocational objective, above all, is to continually be faithful to my call in Christ. I pray that my faith will continue to be strengthened and my joy will continue to be full as I seek the Lord’s guidance in this direction of life. As I have stated, my vocation goal is twofold, with teaching and preaching God’s word as a primary objective and then caring and counseling people in need and to place their faith and trust in Jesus and what He has done upon the cross. I hope to center my ministry around this focus and to be an impact and influence on the Asian American community in the Los Angeles area. I find that culturally I am able to identify with both an Asian and an American liking and background. It is truly a hybrid and even a separate culture on its own. I hope to use my background and my passion and gifting for the glory of God in advancing His kingdom and to emphasize a gospel life that can transform into a gospel culture.
